The Modelling Network for Major Infectious Diseases (MONID) is a central research network in Germany, funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). It consists of ten research networks and a superordinate coordination centre. MONID is committed to the interdisciplinary exchange of leading scientists in order to strengthen modelling expertise in this field.

In addition to promoting established researchers, the network also supports young modellers and early career researchers. MONID also acts as an important point of contact for political enquiries, especially during pandemic crises, and offers scientific expertise to support political decisions.

This year, the MONID Summer School will take place in Halle (Saale) from 23 to 27 September 2024. Under the title ‘Agent-based Modelling for Spread of Infectious Diseases - Basics, Challenges and Best Practices’, the Summer School will provide in-depth knowledge of the fundamental principles of agent-based modelling (ABM). Participants will learn to understand the basics of disease transmission dynamics and contact networks within ABMs, explore methods to create realistic synthetic populations and gain insights into modelling disease interventions. The event is aimed at PhD students and scientists with basic knowledge of infectious disease modelling and a particular interest in ABMs.

Speakers include experts Niki Popper and Martin Bicher. Niki Popper will give a talk entitled ‘Use of dynamic modelling tools in decision-making processes’, while Martin Bicher will talk about ‘Development of dynamic population models and their implementation as runtime-efficient simulation’.

The MONID Summer School thus offers a unique opportunity to learn about current developments in the modelling of infectious diseases and to benefit from leading experts in this field.

The dwh GmbH is continuously involved in important decision-making projects in the national and international health sector. These include a framework agreement with the ECDC, which ensures scientific support in the fight against infectious diseases in Europe.
